The social unrest recently experienced in Charlottesville, Virginia might lead some Christians to believe that “racism” is a human evil practiced only by white Nationalists and Neo-Nazi. One of the most important sections in the first letter to Timothy is usually remembered by the following line: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” This statement occurs in the context of Paul’s invitation for us to reflect on the ways in which the love of money distorts our judgments and priorities (see 1 Timothy 6:7-11).
